Homeschooling & Homesteading

Join us as we homeschool, garden and preserve food.

Here you will find educational resources that inspire children to learn about homesteading, gardening and nature. You can also follow along as I build my garden and preserve the bounty we will hopefully harvest here in beautiful North Carolina.

Grateful Harvest Homestead

After a 4 year search, we finally found the perfect place for our family and I could not be more grateful. We are a family of 5 (with three amazing girls) in the beautiful Piedmont region of North Carolina in zone 7b. I hope to build our garden to provide fresh eating through the spring, summer and fall and then preserve the rest for winter.

Tell me about your homeschool journey.

My oldest daughter was born in August. (Which was not the best planning as a teacher, because she is on the edge of being the oldest or youngest of the class.) However, as she grew and I had more children, I knew I wanted to be home with them. We decided to do a “trial” run of preschool for my daughter when she was 5. If it went well, we could continue to homeschool another year. If it didn’t go well, she could still enter public school as a Kindergartener. It went well and we are finishing up our third year.

How can children benefit from homesteading activities?

Children can gain valuable skills through homesteading activities, such as understanding where food comes from, developing responsibility by caring for plants and animals, and fostering a love for nature. These experiences can enhance their education and promote healthy living.

What is your education background?

I majored in Family and Consumer Sciences in college at East Carolina University. I enjoyed all the different aspects of the degree, which included nutrition, culinary arts and hospitality, sewing, child development, financial literacy, and interior design. After teaching FCS, I added elementary education to my teaching license and taught in lower elementary. Once I got pregnant, I decided to stay home.

Why do you homeschool?

My number one reason was so that I could be with my children. We love the freedom of a slow morning and going out on adventures together. Another reason was the ability to choose curriculum and being able to adjust to their needs. I also love that they can pursue their passions deeply.

Tell me more about yourself.

In addition to creating educational resources, gardening and preserving food, I love to quilt. I enjoy hand stitching the layers together. (My favorite part is hand stitching the binding.) When I have a long stretch of time, I enjoy sewing clothes for the children as well. I also like to cross stitch. My family enjoys going on nature walks together and we love to do pizza and movie nights.
